A 1961 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Engineering and a 1967 graduate of its School of Law, Mr. Thompson entered private practice in 1972 where he initially engaged in the general practice of law involving both civil and criminal matters. Prior to that Mr. Thompson worked three years in the Law Department of a major aluminum producer where his practice was concentrated on matters relating to the protection, transfer and use of both patented and unpatented technology; financing and insuring against expropriation of an offshore partnership engaged in bauxite mining and alumina production; and domestic procurement, including plant construction. For two years he also worked in the Washington, D.C. office of this company where responsibilities included the representation of aluminum industry interests before various administrative agencies and Congress.

In 1978, he and C. Grice McMullan, Jr., constituted ThompsonMcMullan as a firm that would emphasize law pertaining both to commercial transactions and litigation. Since that time, Mr. Thompson has represented businesses with respect to the formation of corporations and other business entities; the creation of agreements establishing rights of shareholders of closely held companies; establishing organizations for the national and international sale and domestic manufacture of computer peripheral equipment; the negotiation of disputes involving domestic and international sales of industrial equipment; the disposition of asbestos and other toxic waste materials; the development, including lease and sale, of commercial and residential real estate; buying and selling of privately owned businesses; the representation of individuals and businesses, including banks, in litigation involving, among other things, breach of contract, commercial torts, negotiable instruments, letters of credit, antitrust, and toxic waste spills.

Mr. Thompson is admitted to practice in Virginia and is a member of the Virginia and Richmond Bar Associations. He is also a member of the regional panel of commercial arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association and has been added to the Association’s Large Complex Case Panel. Mr. Thompson is a Board Member and Fellow of the Virginia Rail Policy Institute and  has been active in a variety of civic organizations, including service on the Richmond, Virginia City Council, member of the City Council appointed committee to study city government, and the Governor’s Regional Economic Development Council. He is also serving on the Richmond Charter Review Commission. Mr. Thompson is a current member of the State Water Control Board and the Falls of the James Scenic River Advisory Committee. He was also selected for inclusion in 2010 Virginia Super Lawyers for Business and Corporate Law.

He formerly served as Board member, Vice president and General Counsel of Virginians for  High Speed Rail. He also served as chairman of the James River Association and as a member of the boards of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce and Meritas, a worldwide organization consisting of 200 independent business and litigation law firms located in more than 70 countries.
