Shockoe Slip is a cobblestone cul-de-sac with a fountain at the center. It is in Richmond’s Shockoe Slip Historic District, which is bounded by Main, Canal, 12th, and 14th Streets. In effect, Shockoe Slip is 13th Street just south of Cary Street.

Street Parking Option

The directions that follow will take you to the parking garage on Virginia St. As an alternative to the garage, you may be able to find metered, on-street parking in Shockoe Slip or in the rest of the Historic District. If you choose the on-street parking option, just disregard the portions of the following directions that mention Virginia St.

From the North (e.g., Fredericksburg or D.C.)

Go south on I-95 to Richmond. Take Exit 74B (Franklin St.) on the right. Take next right onto Franklin St. Take next left onto 14th St. Cross Main St. Cross Cary St. Take next right onto Canal St. Take next right onto Virginia St. Turn left into parking garage at 100 Virginia St.  Summary: I-95 south, Exit 74B, right on Franklin, left on 14th, right on Canal, right on Virginia, left into garage.

From the West (e.g., Charlottesville or Innsbrook)

Go east on I-64 to Richmond. Bear right onto I-95 south. Take Exit 74B (Franklin St.) on the right. Take next right onto Franklin St. Take next left onto 14th St. Cross Main St. Cross Cary St. Take next right onto Canal St. Take next right onto Virginia St. Turn left into parking garage at 100 Virginia St.  Summary: I-64 east, I-95 south, Exit 74B, right on Franklin, left on 14th, right on Canal, right on Virginia, left into garage.

From the East (e.g., Richmond Airport, Williamsburg, or Norfolk) 

Go west on I-64 to Richmond. When you see downtown buildings directly ahead of you, get in left lane. Take I-95 south. Take Exit 74B (Franklin St.) on the right. Take next right onto Franklin St. Take next left onto 14th St. Cross Main St. Cross Cary St. Take next right onto Canal St. Take next right onto Virginia St. Turn left into parking garage at 100 Virginia St.  Summary: I-64 west, I-95 south, Exit 74B, right on Franklin, left on 14th, right on Canal, right on Virginia, left into garage.

From the South (e.g., Petersburg)

Go north on I-95 to Richmond. On the bridge crossing the James River, take Exit 74A (Downtown Expressway) on the right. Take the Canal St. exit (the first exit) on the right, which, after you pay 20 cents toll, puts you on Canal St, heading west. Take the next right on 10th[?] St. Take the next right on Cary St. Proceed east on Cary St. After passing Shockoe Slip (on right), take the next right onto Virginia Street. Take immediate right into parking garage at 100 Virginia St.  Summary: I-95 north, Exit 74A, Canal St. Exit, right on 10th, right on Cary, right on Virginia, right into garage.

From the Southwest (e.g., Danville or Brandermill)

Go northeast on Powhite Parkway. Shortly after crossing the James River, bear right onto the Downtown Expressway. Pay 50 cents toll. Take the 9th St. exit on the right, which puts you on Byrd St. Get in center lane. Cross 9th St. Cross 10th St. Turn left onto 12th St. Turn right onto Canal St. Turn left onto Virginia Street. Turn left into parking garage at 100 Virginia St.  Summary: Northeast on Powhite Parkway, right on Downtown Expressway, 9th. St. Exit, left on 12th, right on Canal, left on Virginia, left into garage.

After you get to the Parking Garage

In the parking garage (Central Parking System) at 100 Virginia St., park in the public parking area, such as level 5. Bringing your parking receipt with you to have it stamped by our receptionist, take the elevator up to the Plaza level, which opens onto Shockoe Slip. Walk across the street to ThompsonMcMullan, 100 Shockoe Slip, which is “The Commercial Block”, a red brick building with iron gates folded back against the wall. Take the elevator to the 3rd floor. To Return from parking garage to North, South, East, or West

Leaving parking garage, turn left onto Virginia St. Immediately turn right onto Cary St. Immediately turn left onto 14th St. Proceed up hill. Turn right onto Broad Street. Immediately turn right onto entrance ramp to I-95 (and I-64[?]). Follow signs.

To Return from parking garage to South, via Downtown Expressway

Leaving parking garage, turn right onto Virginia St. Turn right onto Canal St. Turn left onto 10th St. Cross over Downtown Expressway. Turn left onto Byrd St. Immediately take entrance ramp to Downtown Expressway on left (20 cents toll). Go east on Downtown Expressway. Turn right onto I-95 south. 

To Return from parking garage to North, West, or Southwest, via Downtown Expressway

Leaving parking garage, turn right onto Virginia St. Turn right onto Canal St. Turn left onto entrance ramp to Downtown Expressway. Pay 50 cents toll. Follow signs.
