New Medicaid Coverage for Elderly and Disabled

  • ARE YOU 65 OR OLDER?
  • ARE YOU DISABLED?
  • DO YOU RECEIVE SOCIAL SECURITY OR SSI?
  • HAVE YOU BEEN DENIED MEDICAID BEFORE?
  • HAVE YOU BEEN GIVEN A LARGE MEDICAID "SPEND-DOWN?
  • DO YOU NEED HELP PAYING FOR YOUR MEDICINE?

IF YOU ANSWERED "YES" TO ANY OF THESE QUESTIONS, A NEW MEDICAID PROGRAM WHICH STARTED JULY 1, 2001, IN VIRGINIA MAY HELP YOU.

  • You must be at least 65 years old or disabled.
  • Your income can be up to $593 per month. Couples can have upto $794 per month.
  • Your SSI payment does not count as income.
  • Your resources (bank accounts, non-home property, etc.) cannot be worth more than $2,000. ($3,000 for a couple)
  • Land around your home does not count.

If you income and resources meet these levels, you can get full Medicaid coverage each month without a "spend-down".

APPLICATIONS FOR THIS NEW MEDICAID COVERAGE MUST BE FILED AT YOUR LOCAL DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES.

WHEN YOU APPLY, BRING PAPERS THAT SHOW YOUR INCOME, BANK ACCOUNTS AND OTHER RESOURCES.
