Mr. Grier joined ThompsonMcMullan in 2004 as a Principal. Previously, he was a partner in the Richmond office of Troutman Sanders, LLP (formerly Mays & Valentine, L.L.P.) where he served as a partner for 27 years. His practice involves the business and income tax aspects of small to medium sized businesses and their owners, including formation (corporation, limited liability company, limited partnership, professional corporation, nonstock corporation), expansion, contracting, acquisition, merger, sale and dissolution as well as personal and business income and estate tax planning. He has represented parties in connection with private placement and syndication of business ventures; the finance and development of large commercial and residential historic developments; the sale of a multi-state automobile leasing company; the start-up and development of an internet sales and service company, and the operation of a hotel development company. Mr. Grier’s practice also includes representation of physicians and dentists in connection with acquisition of practices and practice assets, employment contracts, professional corporations and limited liability companies related to practice and practice assets, employment issues and business and tax issues relating to the practice. In 2003, Mr. Grier was named a member of Virginia’s Best Lawyers in Health Law. Mr. Grier has also represented non-profit organizations in connection with their formation and qualification as exempt organizations; advice relating to operations, advice relating to conflicts of interest, tax exempt activities, and advice relating to related party transactions.
Mr. Grier graduated from Duke University in 1967 with a B.A. Degree in Accounting and attended the University of North Carolina School of Law. He graduated in 1971 with J.D. and as Member of the Law Review of the University of North Carolina. Mr. Grier was admitted to practice in Virginia in 1971.
Mr. Grier is a member of the American, Virginia, and Richmond Bar Associations. He is a past member of the Third District Disciplinary Committee of the Virginia State Bar and is past Chairman of the Health Law Section of the Virginia State Bar. He has previously served as Chairman of the Greater Richmond Technology Council, Chairman of the Virginia Health Care Foundation, Chairman of SeniorNavagation.com, and Chairman of Richmond Memorial Health Foundation. Mr. Grier currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Health Care Foundation and SeniorNavigator.com.
