A graduate of the University of Virginia School of Engineering and a graduate of its School of Law, Mr. Thompson entered private practice in 1972 where he initially engaged in the general practice of law involving both civil and criminal matters. He officially retired from the firm in October of 2015.

In 1978, he and C. Grice McMullan, Jr. started ThompsonMcMullan as a firm that emphasized law pertaining both to commercial transactions and litigation. Over the years, Mr. Thompson represented businesses with respect to:

  • Formation of corporations and other business entities;
  • Creation of agreements establishing rights of shareholders of closely held companies;
  • Establishing organizations for the national and international sale and domestic manufacture of computer peripheral equipment;
  • Negotiation of disputes involving domestic and international sales of industrial equipment;
  • Disposition of asbestos and other toxic waste materials;
  • Development, including lease and sale, of commercial and residential real estate; buying and selling of privately owned businesses; and
  • Representation of individuals and businesses, including banks, in litigation involving, among other things, breach of contract, commercial torts, negotiable instruments, letters of credit, antitrust, and toxic waste spills.
