Town of Smithfield Elects ThompsonMcMullan as Permanent Town Attorney

On June 2, 2026, The Town of Smithfield town council unanimously voted to retain ThompsonMcMullan, P.C. as permanent legal counsel for a one-year contract, with the option to renew for four additional one-year terms.

The role of outside counsel was put out for bid by Smithfield in November of last year, with proposals from competing firms due in January of this year. Smithfield then narrowed down the bids from five firms to ThompsonMcMullan, Sands Anderson, and Pender & Coward, with Sands Anderson serving as the interim town attorney and Pender & Coward being the most local to Smithfield.

Proposals were scored on a point-based scale built on each firm’s number of years in business, size, resumes of attorneys, experience in local government law, references, and geographic proximity to the town. Smithfield also conducted interviews with the three final firms, which counted for 60% of their overall composite score from all Town Council members.

We are honored to have been elected and to add Smithfield to the list of local governments and their officials that we serve as outside counsel.
