Trusts, Estates, and Elder Law attorney Karen Dunivan Konvicka is scheduled to participate as a speaker at the State Bar of Georgia’s Special Needs Trust Program for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. The one-day conference will offer six hours of CLE to attendees and will be hosted both in-person and virtually. Comprised of seven speaker sessions, the program is focused on acting as a trustee, pooled trusts, working with trial attorneys, and more. Karen’s session, “Public Benefits, Special Needs Trusts, and Disbursements”, will discuss federal entitlement programs, types of entitlements, categories of eligibility, earned versus needs-based benefits, and income and resource limits. The session will cover the affect of distributions from a special needs trust on the beneficiaries’ public benefits, and more specifically, whether distributions are countable income to the beneficiary and what alternate methods are available to pay the beneficiaries’ expenses.
