Stephen Steward, Jr.

A lawyer and pianist who parlayed a passion for thoughtful analysis and advocacy into a legal career

Before pursuing a legal career, Stephen Steward spent years immersed in music, drawn to the unique balance it offers between creativity and structure. As a musician, he found fulfillment not only in the creative process, but in collaborating with others and bringing joy to audiences through performance. After successfully researching, drafting, and presenting a case to resolve a difference in perspective with a former employer, he was inspired to seek a profession where those skills would be at the center of his work, as the experience revealed how much he enjoyed building a persuasive argument, conducting research, and defending a position. 

A self-described extrovert, Stephen sees many parallels between the practice of law and his background in music. Both require a blend of independent preparation and meaningful collaboration. Whether researching legal issues, drafting documents, and communicating with clients, or working alongside colleagues to achieve a common goal, he values the teamwork that drives successful outcomes. Much like musicians support one another’s performances, he believes lawyers are at their best when they contribute not only to their own matters, but also to the success of their colleagues and clients. 

Prior to joining ThompsonMcMullan, Stephen held two clerkships; the first in Virginia’s 13th Judicial District where he clerked for the Honorable Clarence N. Jenkins, Jr. and the Honorable Bradley B. Cavedo in the Circuit Court for the City of Richmond, and the second the following year serving the Honorable Brian F. Kenney, Chief Judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. In these roles, he gained insight into the role judges play not only in interpreting the law correctly but in ensuring that justice is served, and public confidence in the courts is maintained. While clerking, Stephen learned that though the law ultimately governs every decision, judges often seek ways to achieve equitable outcomes whenever possible. That perspective continues to shape his practice and gives him confidence in appearing before courts, knowing that judges share a commitment to fairness, justice, and the integrity of the legal system. 

What he finds most rewarding about practicing law is its personal nature. Stephen believes that every client engagement presents an opportunity to bring a unique voice and level of care to the work. Acknowledging that the legal profession is often viewed as adversarial, he approaches each interaction with empathy and humility, with the appreciation that in every dispute there is a real person on the other side. To Stephen, understanding the perspectives of others leads to stronger relationships, more effective advocacy, and better results. He understands that effective advocacy is not just about knowing the law, but also understanding the people involved, listening to their concerns, and finding thoughtful solutions to their problems. Whether helping a client, collaborating with colleagues, or advocating before a court, Stephen strives to approach every matter with preparation, empathy, and a commitment to achieving the best possible outcome.
