An attorney who believes that being a lawyer is synonymous with being an advocate

“The practice of law is the business of worry transfer” is a quote that not only guided Tim’s classes in law school but is at the forefront of his practice today. Being a lawyer is a role that he takes very seriously, as he feels the responsibility of carrying his client’s problems and ensuring the right outcome, no matter the issue.

A graduate of The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, Timothy A. Richard served as the Managing Editor of the Catholic University Law Review. While there, he was also involved in moot court, competing in two Intellectual Property competitions and an ERISA competition. In addition to competing, Tim ran the ERISA competition during his final year of law school and drafted problems for two other competitions. Tim gained experience in the foundations of good legal writing and how to approach complex legal problems through his internship with the Honorable Ryan T. Holte at the Court of Federal Claims. He also held an internship with the Newport News Commonwealth Attorney’s Office which provided him with invaluable experience in seeing advocacy play out and highlighted the importance of a strong attorney-client relationship.

Prior to joining ThompsonMcMullan, Tim clerked for the Judges of the 23rd Judicial Circuit of Virginia in Roanoke, which he feels was the best way to enter the legal profession because he saw a variety of issues at every stage of litigation in his first year as a lawyer. He then served as a clerk for the Honorable Glen A. Huff with the Court of Appeals of Virginia, where he learned firsthand how the decisions at trial, of both lawyers and judges, impact cases on appeal. While he continued to strengthen his legal research and writing, he also had a unique opportunity to mentor law student interns, a role he grew to love because it allowed him to aid in developing future lawyers.

In Tim’s words, it’s an exciting time to be in the practice of appellate law with the expanded jurisdiction, as so much is yet to be determined. He feels passionately about being on the advocate side and playing a role in advancing the client’s interests and seeing a case through to court, bringing with him a unique perspective gained from experience at both ThompsonMcMullan and with various judges.

Tim lives in Midlothian with his wife Megan and, when not behind his desk or in a courtroom, can be found traveling, running, or cheering for the New England Patriots.
