ThompsonMcMullan Elects Joley L. Steffens and Michael G. Matheson as Directors to the Firm

ThompsonMcMullan is pleased to announce that Joley L. Steffens and Michael G. Matheson were elected as new directors to the firm.

Christopher Malone, Managing Director of the firm, said, “Both Joley and Michael are excellent attorneys and their contributions to our firm and the clients we represent are invaluable. We look forward to each of them being a part of our firm for many years to come.”

Ms. Steffens practices elder law, Medicaid and long-term care planning, and estate and special needs planning with the firm, as well as specializes in estate administration and fiduciary litigation.

Ms. Steffens is the President- Elect of the Virginia Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (VAELA), and serves on the Board of the Metropolitan Richmond Women’s Bar Association (MRWBA). She also serves as Co-Chair of the Richmond Bar Association Bench Bar Conference, and is Treasurer of the Elder Law & Special Needs Section Council of the Virginia Bar Association.

Ms. Steffens was named Young Lawyer of the Year by Richmond Bar Association in 2015, was named Top 40 under 40 by Style Weekly in 2014, and was named the Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year by Legal Information Network for Cancer (LINC) in 2014.

Mr. Matheson is a member of the firm’s litigation practice group. He enjoys a broad-based litigation practice, with an emphasis on business litigation and civil rights defense. He regularly defends constitutional officers, law enforcement, and local government officials in civil rights actions. He has represented state officials in civil claims involving search and seizure, use of force, FOIA, conditions of confinement, freedom of speech, due process, mandamus, and election law disputes. Mr. Matheson also has experience handling lawsuits involving easements and land use, estates and trust disputes, and insurance coverage disputes.  His representation of businesses includes the prosecution and defense of commercial law, construction, and insurance coverage disputes. Mr. Matheson handles cases in both state and federal courts throughout the Commonwealth.

Mr. Matheson has been recognized in the Super Lawyer’s “Rising Stars” Virginia List, Civil Litigation Defense category from 2014 – 2016, and Virginia Business Magazine’s “Legal Elite”, Young Lawyer (Under 40) Law category, 2015 – 2016. He is the President-Elect of the Chesterfield Bar Association and an Area Representative for the Virginia State Bar’s Real Estate Section.
