An attorney who finds the good, embraces the challenge, and never stops learning

Scott Herbert’s experience is steeped in giving back to those around him and finding purpose in everything he does. In between enrolling in law school and serving in the United States Marine Corps, he founded the Appalachian Trail Walk for Warriors, a 501(c)(3), and hiked the 2,189-mile trail. His decision to hike the AT was made, in part, by seeing it as an opportunity to start a nonprofit, which not only contributed to society and combined his experience as a veteran, but required him to go through the legal requirements of establishing an entity. This process allows Scott to relate to his clients, as he understands the foundation necessary for starting and operating a business.

Scott’s legal background spans state government, regulatory law, and civil litigation. In his private practice, he represented businesses and insurers in a variety of causes of action and transactions. Prior to that, Scott was a member of the Virginia Attorney General’s Civil Litigation Division where he advocated for consumers’ and small businesses’ interests in public utility rate cases before the State Corporation Commission. Upon graduating from law school, he started his legal career as a judicial clerk for Virginia’s Sixth Judicial Circuit in Southern Virginia. Scott has experience with local tax issues, including sales and real estate taxes, drafting policies for employees, the Virginia Clean Economy Act, contract disputes, environmental compliance, and the Virginia Human Rights Act.

He attended graduate school at the College of William & Mary. Scott earned his J.D. from William & Mary Law School, where he was a Center for the Study of Law and Markets Fellow, and his M.B.A. from the Raymond A. Mason School of Business.

Scott enjoys hiking and chasing waterfalls. He now helps maintain the Appalachian Trail as a member of the local chapter of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
