World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June 15th marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), a day dedicated to providing a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons and adults with disabilities. First recognized on June 15, 2006, WEAAD highlights the cultural, social, economic, and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and was first launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.

Elder abuse is defined as the mistreatment or harming of an older person and includes physical, emotion/psychological, and sexual abuse, neglect, self-neglect, and financial exploitation. Unfortunately, only a small of fraction of abuse that occurs is reported to authorities. The National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) offers a variety of resources and materials to draw attention to abuse issues and promotes the sharing of information in order to stop the abuse.

If you, or someone you know, suspects elder abuse, you can use the following resources to report the case:

  • Virginia Adult Protective Services 24 Hour Hotline: 1-888-832-3858
  • Virginia Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Hotline – Action Alliance Hotline Center: 1-800-838-8238
  • If someone is in immediate danger and in case of an emergency, dial 911
